This Halloween, Fair Cape Dairies challenged me to get in the kitchen and make something spooktacularly fangtastic.

Obviously when it comes to baking with the kids, the simpler the better, and my kids love chocolate (because they don’t get much of it, poor things) so I thought it would be a nice treat to make some Halloween chocolate spiderweb cupcakes.

I actually found a recipe which includes bananas and I tweaked it to include amasi (because I’m a new convert and put amasi in everything) and they turned out so well. They’re soft and (and I hate to say it) moist and they’re pretty darn delicious, if I do say so myself.

Halloween chocolate spider web cupcakes


3 small bananas

3 eggs

180 ml Fair Cape amasi

140 ml water

150 ml canola oil

350g sugar

250g flour

65g cocoa

2 tsp bicarb of soda

pinch of salt

200g each of dark and white chocolate

Easy-peasy instructions

Mash the bananas. Add the eggs, amasi, water and oil. Mix.

Add the sugar, flour, cocoa, bicarb and salt. Fold until combined.

Put into cupcake cases and bake for approx 20 minutes.

Once cooked, leave to cool.

Melt the dark and white chocolate in separate bowls – I microwave until melted, stirring every 30 seconds.

Spread the dark chocolate on a cupcake. Put some of the white chocolate in a piping bag and pipe concentric circles of the white chocolate on the dark chocolate. Use a toothpick to drag lines from the centre of the cupcake to the outside of the cake to make the web-look. You can also use the dark chocolate on the white chocolate.

And voila.
