Free Baby Samples For Moms-To-Be:

South Africa

Looking for free products for pregnant women in South Africa? Look no further!

Who doesn’t love free stuff?

As you may know by now, I’m a fiend for shopping. Usually for myself. It’s my money, so I don’t feel bad about that. The funny thing is, since falling pregnant and having Jeremy and Seb, my focus has been on shopping for them.

I mean, who can blame me with all the fabulous local baby shops we have?

Anyway, I’m also a big (massive) fan of free samples and free stuff – who isn’t? So one of my greatest discoveries the first time round was finding out about freebies for pregnant women and free baby samples. In South Africa, the two most common freebies are from Momentum/Discovery and Dischem.

How to get free stuff when pregnant

Our family is on Momentum medical aid so let’s start there.

Momentum baby bag

With Momentum Multiply you simply need to sign up for the Momentous Baby programme . To qualify for the free baby stuff, you must be a member of Momentum and Multiply. Register on the programme after the 12th week of your pregnancy (you can just phone them) and after your 24th week they will send you a goodie bag, which looks something like this:

Momentum Multiply baby bag

Included in my bag this time around were:

  • Nappy pants sample
  • box of breast pads
  • Wet wipes
  • Elektra Thermometer
  • Pigeon dummy
  • Tiny Love toy
  • Baby car sign
  • Baby Gym milestone cards
  • Changing mat
  • Voucher book for Baby City

Vitality Baby 1000 Days programme

Discovery Vitality members who are pregnant or have a baby under the age of two can join the Vitality Baby 1 000 days programme. You will need to reactivate the Vitality Baby benefit once your child is born to ensure that you continue to earn double Vitality points until your baby turns 6 months old.

When you register for Vitality Baby, you will receive a code which will be displayed on the website, you will be able to SMS the code to your cellphone. Take this code to any Toys R Us or Babies R Us store to collect your Vitality Baby gift pack. It’s filled with useful information, as well as exciting gifts for you and your baby!

We have never been with Discovery so I can’t tell you what free product samples are in their baby bags. But I know if you activate the HealthyCare benefit you can earn up to 25% in cashback on selected baby products at Clicks and Dischem.

Mediclinic Baby programme

If you give birth at a Mediclinic hospital, you should receive a “luxury” baby bag. I have no idea what’s in the bag but you can register from 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Register:

  • Online at www.mediclinic.co.za
  • By completing a registration form at the hospital and handing it in at the hospital.
  • By SMS Register4baby to 37838 (you will be contacted and registration will be done telephonically).

Dis-chem baby bag

Now, Dis-chem. For the Dis-chem baby bag you also need to join the Dis-chem Baby Programme, by registering at the Customer Care desk or by calling them. You also need to earn R1 000 on baby essentials (excluding baby formula and bottle feeding accessories).

It sounds like a lot but let’s be honest, when you’re buying for baby things add up. If you’re going to buy these things anyway you might as well buy them at Dischem.  Then, when you reach the 28-week mark they’ll call you to collect your bag, which looks a little something like this:

Dischem freebie baby bag

Included in my baby bag this time were:

  • Pampers nappy sample
  • Discovery medical kit
  • Softi maternity pads
  • Wet wipes
  • Ear buds
  • Cotton balls
  • Sudocrem baby cream
  • Bennets bum cream
  • Dischem surgical spirits
  • Tommee Tippee dummy
  • Teejel gel sample
  • Pack of disposable underwear
  • Dischem lip balm
  • Baby Things baby shampoo, body wash, baby oil, body lotion, baby powder
  • Dischem Benefits magazine

* The Dis-chem baby programme was discontinued for a while but as of January 2024 it is up and running again.

Clicks baby programme

Clicks also provides:

  • pregnancy and baby newsletters to guide you during pregnancy and through your child’s development
  • vaccination reminders
  • exclusive vouchers and discounts on selected products

You should also get some kind of a baby bag from your hospital. I had J at Kingsbury and we were given a bag on arrival with a lot of necessary samples. I gave birth to Sebastian at Christiaan Barnard and got a similar baby bag filled with free samples.

Free baby products samples

Another idea is to go straight to the source. You have nothing to lose.

I’ve heard of moms emailing Bennett’s and receiving free samples: info@bennettsforbabies.co.za

You can request a free sample from DryNites absorbent pants – just go to the link here.

As you can see, these free product samples are not to be sniffed at. If you’re smart and sort yourself out with this lot of freebies you can save yourself some serious cents. It’s also sensible to organise this before you pack your hospital bag because it’ll save you buying a few things.

Plus, these baby bags/ nappy bags come in useful when you need to have one in the car, one on the pram, one in the husband’s car, one for granny – then you have all the little product samples to pack in each bag so you don’t need to struggle to make sure your nappy bag has everything you need in it.

Now all we need is to persuade them to include monitors and breast pumps!

PLEASE NOTE: I am not able to provide free samples of products.
